By doing so, I assure you that you will be able to create all the text documents you want. Happy reading and, above all, happy working!

LibreOffice (Windows/MacOS/Linux)

LibreOffice

Among the first free writing programs to download that you can consider is LibreOffice, one of the best free alternatives to the Microsoft Office package. It is a free and open source productivity suite that allows you to not only create text documents and spreadsheets but also make presentations, charts, databases and drawings. It is available for Windows, macOS and Linux.

To download LibreOffice on your computer, connect to the official website of the software, make sure that near the heading Choose your operating system the operating system of your interest is selected and press the Download button, to start the download.

If you are using a Mac, open the .dmg package you just downloaded, move LibreOffice to the Applications folder of macOS and open the path in question. Now, right-click on the LibreOffice icon and select Open twice in a row to bypass macOS restrictions on applications from non-certified developers (this is only required for the first time).

LibreOffice

After that, close LibreOffice by pressing the key combination cmd+q, connect again to the official website of the program and click on the option Translated user interface: Italian, to download the files necessary to translate the LibreOffice interface into Italian (this operation is not necessary on Windows PCs since the files in question are included in the “basic” package).

Then, open the new .dmg package, right-click the LibreOffice Language Pack executable, choose the Open option from the menu that appears and click the Open, Install and OK buttons to install the Italian language pack. If a warning about permissions appears, click the Yes, identify me button, type the password of your macOS user account and click OK twice in a row.

Now, regardless of the operating system installed on your computer, launch LibreOffice and select the Writer Document option located in the left sidebar to open a new text document and start writing.

Finally, I’ll point out that LibreOffice is not available in app form. However, you can download the free Collabora Office app for Android and iOS/iPadOS devices, which is based on LibreOffice and allows you to both create new text documents and open those created by computers with LibreOffice.

FocusWriter (Windows/Linux)

FocusWriter

FocusWriter is another good writing program available for free for Windows and Linux PCs. It is the ideal solution for those who don’t have particular needs, except to create simple text documents without any distraction. In fact, FocusWriter offers a full-screen interface in which only the worksheet is shown.

If you think this is the most suitable solution for your needs, connect to the official FocusWriter website and click on the Download now button, located in the sidebar on the right. Once the download is complete, double-click on the FocusWriter_[version].exe file, press the Yes button to allow the software to make changes to your computer, select the language of your interest (e.g. Italian) from the drop-down menu and click the OK button.

At this point, you should see a new, completely blank text document in which you can start writing. By moving the mouse cursor upwards, you can see the available editing tools (e.g. Format, to insert text in bold, italic, etc., to create headings or to align text) and some additional options, such as Themes which allows you to change the background of the FocusWriter interface.

Pages (macOS)

Pages

If you are looking for free writing programs on Mac, you can rely on Pages. It is a free document creation software developed directly by Apple and installed as “standard” on all Macs (if you have uninstalled it, you can download it for free from the Mac App Store). In addition, it is also accessible from the Web and available as an application for iPhone/iPad.

If you think this is the best solution for your needs, start Pages by clicking on its icon on the Dock bar or Launchpad, press the New Document button and select the Blank option, to open a new blank text document.

Alternatively, you can also choose one of the ready-to-use templates from the Basic, Reports, Books, Letters, Resumes, Letterheads, Certificates, etc. sections. If, on the other hand, you want to open a Pages file that you have received, you can simply double-click on the file in question.

Regardless of the type of document you have previously chosen, in the newly displayed screen you can use the text formatting tools located in the right panel, while to add new elements, such as tables, charts or text boxes, you can use the tools located in the top horizontal bar or in the menu bar.

For example, to go back to Pages and undo the last changes you made, you can select the Edit and Undo options (or press the cmd+z key combination).
